The Funniest Misunderstandings from My School Days

Daily writing prompt
What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve ever been part of?

Not sure how funny this is, but in Elementary School—3rd grade to be exact. I went to tell my mother all the things I did in school that day. Bear in mind this was just at the cusp of electronic devices such as handhelds and computers. She was in the middle of grading papers when I piped up, “We watched something great on the playground today!”

Mom didn’t seem too surprised. “Oh yeah, what was it?”

“A rated ‘R’ movie,” I said cheerfully.

That made her stop. “I don’t remember receiving a permission slip for you to watch anything rated ‘R’.” She stood, with every bit of intent of speaking to my teacher—who, by the way, was only two doors down.

I didn’t think much of it at first as I added, “Yep, Aaron and me, sat on the junglegym watching the bulldozers on his screen.”

Mom stopped, looked as if seeing me for the first time. “Roxanne, what do you think an ‘R’ rating means?”

At eight, I barely resisted the urge to roll my eyes. “Mom, rated ‘R’ stands for ‘rocks’, duh”
