Expecting a coworker’s morals or work ethic to match your standards is the same as setting yourself up for disappointment. Focus on giving your best. Worrying about others is a fast track to unneeded stress.
At the factory where I work, my first-shift coworkers habitually cut corners to try to leave on time. They move parts at an angle to make fixtures appear full, or leave areas half-finished and then leave. For the longest time, this bothered me because I always left them in the best condition possible. If I could, a note was left detailing what was missed and why it could not be fixed. To me, these actions were typical. My new boss explained that my measures to ensure my line kept running every day were not standard. He told me I was going over and beyond what is typical for an average associate and that although it would be nice if everyone followed my example, I should not expect it from others.
That day, I had a significant breakthrough. I won’t claim that I’m stress-free, but I’ve certainly learned to let the smaller things affect me less. This journey of personal growth has been instrumental in managing my workplace stress.
